Recently blessed - stories
To my own detriment, I have been fiercely
independent for most of my life and find it very difficult to 'receive'
anything - compliments, gifts, love, financial help... the list goes on.
Recently, I found myself without any local currency whilst travelling abroad
and, I was a little embarrassed to find myself travelling in the first class
compartment of the train when I only had an economy ticket.
My fellow
passengers, with whom I was enjoying some wonderful conversation, realised my
plight and immediately offered to pay the difference - they could quite easily
have let me move to the economy car, but they were so pleasant and happy to
help that I let go of my uncomfortable, independent streak and allowed myself
to receive. A little while later I was treated to a wonderful cappucino and
croissant for breakfast - again I had to repress the urge to
refuse.
Since then I found myself contributing more in an attempt to see
the reaction of others... very special. Just to see a face light up when I give
a little bit more is extremely satisfying.
This week, so far I have
received 'gifts' every single day. On returning from my trip abroad, my two
handsome sons welcomed me home with the biggest smiles and lots of hugs. My
home was clean and tidy and my children were eager to tell me how they had
cooked their own meals and all the washing was up to date! Next day my oldest
son told me he was very proud of me and that he thought I was beautiful, a
smart dresser and a clever woman - my youngest son told me I was 'cool'.
Yesterday, a friend brought me a new 'doormat' as the old one was shabby. She
told me it only cost £1 - but to me, the little acts of kindness I have
received - all in one week - have been priceless. I am finally allowing myself
to RECEIVE.

Thank you for your emails and whilst I
understand that there is no way of contacting the kind person who left a hamper
of food on my doorstep just before Christmas, I would all the same like to put
pen to paper to say thank you. My Wife...Jane passed away in November (aged 43)
and whilst we both new what was coming, there is nothing that can prepare you
for the loss of a best friend with whom you have shared everything and twenty
years of your life. We don't go to church, in fact Jane was given the
non-religeous funeral that she wanted...complete with rock music. I only write
this because we live next to a church and wonder if the hamper was from there.
Thank you who ever you are and for letting me know that someone
cares.

A little confused by all this. Having
visited this inspirational web site - I get the message. Thanks for the email
Neil and as requested, here is my quick story of what happened. Just after
Christmas, I was on my way with our two small children to lunch with a friend.
We drove over a nail and I was forced to pull over on a notoriously dangerous
road. It was bitterly cold, raining and to make matters worse, I was told that
the breakdown service would be at least an hour. We stood at the side of the
road and waited. What amazed me was the amount of cars that drove by. We stood
there for 40 minutes without a single offer of help.
I would like to
thank the kind young man who did stop, who despite the mud, the cold and a well
pressed pair of trousers - took the time to change our wheel and send us safely
on our way. On a miserable day, his good deed was very appreciated. He did not
give me his name and just handed me one of your cards. Having visited this site
- I now understand. I've printed off some of your cards & will return the
favour. Thank you.

Neil - thanks for explaining. What an ace
idea. Putting pen on paper - I'm a Traffic Warden and have been for eight
years. It's just a job. It pays the bills. Most days it's hard and I put up
with all kinds of rude people and insults. Sometimes I just want to resign, but
bringing up a daughter on my own don't give me the right to quit. I go to work
for her. Last week I gave a young chap a ticket. I could not beleive it when he
came back and gave me a bunch of flowers & a takeaway coffee. He said I
looked frozen through (which I was) and that he appreciated the job that I do
and gave me the blessing card. Don't know him. Never seen him since. Amazed. A
kind gesture that will keep me smiling for a long time. And he didn't ask me to
take the ticket back. Very nice. Thank you.

Dear Neil, we argued with the waiter for 10
minutes. What's the catch? We don't get it. Someone paid our £48 bill
yesterday at our favourite Thai restaurant. They just left one of your cards
and note that said - "Nice to see a couple so in love after 25 years married".
It was our anniversay two months ago and we are still very much in love. Mary
laughed all the way home. We both did. Straight on the Internet and we found
your delightful web site. I'm 54 and have never experienced such a kind thing.
What a wonderful idea. We have printed off the cards and are poised to return
one or two kind deeds ourselves. Will let you know or maybe not. Thank you to
the kind soul who paid for our noodles. Yours sincerely
